I apologize in advance for not having any photos of this, but delicious food is meant to be eaten and enjoyed and not always artfully plated and primped for a photo shoot. You’re just going to have to trust me on this one.
It was a chilly Sunday afternoon and we had friends coming over to continue our current campaign of Pathfinder. Our fridge was rather empty after Mr. Spoon’s family had recently left from visiting us for the holidays and I figured pasta and some sauce would be decent fare for our role-playing compatriots. However, I didn’t want to be monitoring a pot of sauce on the stove while our guests were here, so I hatched a plan to make some delicious meat sauce in the crock pot.
Go ahead and put on your robe and wizard hat and so we can begin:
- 2 cans diced tomatoes
- 1 can tomato sauce (plain)
- 1 whole onion, chopped
- 5 – 6 cloves of garlic, crushed or chopped
- 2 tbsp dry Italian Seasoning (you can sub dried oregano or thyme)
- 1/4 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp black pepper
- half a handful of fresh basil, chopped
- 3-4 branches of fresh rosemary, chopped
- 1 package (6 links) of Italian Sausage (hot or mild), casings removed
- salt to taste
- 1 D20 or 20-sided die (optional)
First, make sure you have “Cooking” as a skill on your character sheet, then take your D20 and roll an appliance check to determine whether or not you can operate a crock pot. If you roll a 5 or higher, you may proceed with the directions below.
Put all the ingredients above, except for the sausage and the salt into your crock pot and turn it on to the High setting. While that gets started, heat up a skillet on medium high heat, remove the casings from all 6 links of italian sausage and place them in the hot pan. Stir the meat around intermittently until it is evenly cooked. Once the meat is browned, drain as much fat as you can from the pan before adding the meat to the rest of the ingredients in the crock pot. Cook on High for four (4) hours or until you can’t stand the amazing smells coming from your kitchen. Serve over a pasta of your choice!
This recipe will feed about 6 hungry adventurers comfortably. Have each person roll for initiative to see who gets to serve themselves first and enjoy!
